Recently we took a trip to the grocery store trying to find a ripe pineapple, but I quickly realized I had no idea how to tell what was ripe and what wasn’t! I asked the produce guys for help and seemed to get conflicting answers, so I decided I needed to do a little digging to find the answer.
A few of the things I found out…
1. A ripe pineapple should have a golden shell -avoid pineapples that are brown in color or have black spots.
2. Just like a ripe peach, you should be able to smell if your pineapple is ripe. It will have a fragrant sweet smell if it is good to eat.
3. If the pineapple is ripe you should be able to pull out some of the top-center leaves fairly easily.
4. Pineapples ripen from the bottom to the top, so if it smells sweet at the bottom, but not at the top, she might not be completely ripe.
