Jump Rope Training: How To Jump Rope

Jump rope training is great cardiovascular exercise. Learning how to rope can add another dimension to your workout that can be really fun once you get the hang of it. The great thing about this exercise is that a jump rope is easily portable and does not cost a lot of money.

Jump rope training is great for developing your calve muscles and other muscles in your legs. What most people do not know is that jump rope is a great upper body workout for you arms. So if you are looking for a quick way to burn calories and tone your muscles. Jump rope is right for you.

The Best Rope to Use

Jump ropes come in all shapes and sizes. I prefer ball bearing jump ropes as they last a lot longer than the plastic ropes and flow better. If you are on a budget, any plastic jump rope will do. When you stand on the jump rope and pull up on the handles, your hand should be slightly higher than your elbows. You do not want to jump with a rope that is too short, or too long.

Did you purchase a rope that’s too long? Don’t worry, that is easily remedied by tying a few knots in the rope, preferably closer to the handles.

Learning How to Jump

I recommend starting without a jump rope in hand. Try getting used to jumping with both feet only 2-4 inches off the ground. Like most people who have never jumped rope before, you will likely tend to jump very high at first. You do not want to expend too much energy jumping or you will tire out too quickly.

Once you get the hang of that, try alternating between feet while swinging your wrists in a circular motion.

When you feel comfortable, grab the rope and hold it in only one hand. Try jumping while swinging the rope to your side. This will give you a chance to feel the motion of the jump rope without getting tripped up.

Once you feel comfortable doing this, try grabbing the rope with both hand and jumping through the rope. Make sure that when you swing the rope that you only use your wrists. Your forearms should only move slightly and your shoulders should barely move at all. Do not use your elbows to circle the rope.

How to Properly Hold A Jump Rope

When you hold your jump rope, make sure you are not holding on for dear life. If you hold them too tight, the muscles in your forearms and thumbs will tire out very quickly. So keep your grip loose.

I have noted two of the most basic jump roping techniques above - the two foot jump, and the alternating leg jump. If you would like to learn some more moves to add some excitement to your jump rope training routine, check out my jump rope lessons website for more advanced techniques.
