Starting The New Year The Healthy Way

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Do you usually follow through on them? And how often are your resolutions made with regard to your own health?

Even if you are not making a formal resolution to yourself to lose weight or even just be healthier during the new year, you can still start the new year in a healthy way. There are a few things that you can do which will greatly improve your chances of both starting and finishing the new year with a healthier lifestyle than last year.

The first piece of advice that you should keep in mind is that it is better to choose less ambitious goals that you will stick with than it is to chose very difficult goals that will only last a few days. After all, if you are just choosing a fad diet, any health gains will go away as soon as you return to last year’s behavior. However, if you make a consistent effort to change the way you live, any health gains will be permanent!

Make sure that your New Year’s Resolution can be easily integrated into the rest of your life. This goes along with what was mentioned before. If you base your resolutions on reasonable expectations, you will be much more successful than otherwise.

Start your January first routine with some exercise! This could be as simple as taking a short twenty-minute walk, or it could be a full-fledged workout. You don’t have to resolve to run three miles every day to start the new year in a healthy way - even a little exercise several times a week will help.

Stop eating junk! Find healthy alternatives to traditional snack foods. Some high calorie, high fat snacks aren’t too bad, in moderation! So you may not have to take the bowl of mixed nuts off the table at midnight, but you should limit how many you eat.

The best way to improve your health is through a better diet and more exercise. If you’re interested in starting the new year the healthy way, then you should choose goals that you can keep - and don’t wait until the second day of the year to start!
